Belitung Snorkeling Spots Guide

This is the anchor zone for almost all recreational snorkeling in Belitung.

• Tanjung Kelayang Beach (main jetty area)
• Your boat departure point, not the snorkeling highlight.
• Nearshore water is shallow, sandy, with seagrass patches rather than coral.

• Good for a warm-up swim while boats are organised.

• Lengkuas Island (Pulau Lengkuas)

• The headline Belitung snorkel site.
• Shallow fringing reefs spread around the island, typically accessed from the boat moored a short distance off the beach.
• Visibility can be very clear in the dry season [VERIFY], and there are protected pockets that stay relatively calm on windy days.
• Mix of hard corals, small reef fish and clams; this is where beginners usually “get it” and relax.

• Smaller Reefs En Route (captain’s choice)
• Many boats stop at “spot snorkel” locations between Tanjung Kelayang and Lengkuas.
• These are usually shallow patches identified by the skipper on the day, based on tide and wind.
• Coral quality can vary — some areas are healthier, others show past damage [VERIFY]. Don’t expect pristine, untouched reef; do expect easy, sandy entries and shallow water.

Beyond Lengkuas, island-hopping boats often combine a few different micro-environments that give you variety, not just “one reef after another”.

• Pulau Batu Berlayar (Sailing Rock Island)
• Mostly known for giant granite formations and sand, not coral.
• Good for clear swimming, photos and shallow wading.

• You might see small fish and seagrass areas, but it’s not a core coral-snorkel site.

• Sandbar Islands (e.g. Pulau Pasir / tidal sandbars)

• Appear at low tide as pools of clear, shallow water with white sand.
• Lovely for masks-and-snorkels to spot small fish, hermit crabs and starfish (please look, don’t touch).

• No real coral structures; think “aquarium paddling” rather than reef exploration.

• Tanjung Tinggi coastline

• Famous for boulders and beaches, not structured reefs.
• Some guides might let you snorkel close to the rocks in calm conditions; you’ll see fish sheltering around granite and occasional coral heads.
• Treat this as a scenic swim first, casual snorkel second.

• Fringing coral gardens
• Around Lengkuas and selected snorkel patches you’ll find mixed hard corals and some soft corals [VERIFY].
• Depths often range from knee-deep to a few metres, so you can see plenty without deep diving.

• You will see some areas with broken or stressed coral — a mix of old anchor damage, storms and natural wear [VERIFY]. It’s part of the honest picture here.

• Sandy patches and seagrass

• Between coral bommies you’ll often cross over white sand and seagrass.
• These zones are where kids usually spot starfish, small molluscs and juvenile fish.

Expect smaller species and colourful “supporting cast” rather than big pelagic fish.

Larger wildlife like turtles or rays can occasionally be seen but should be treated as a bonus, not an expectation [VERIFY].

• Dry season (roughly April–October) [VERIFY]
• Generally better visibility and calmer seas around the main belitung snorkeling spots.
• Morning trips usually have the steadiest conditions.

• Peak “Instagram” turquoise tends to appear on clear-sky days between late morning and mid-afternoon.

• Transition and wet season (roughly November–March) [VERIFY]

• You can still snorkel, but expect more variable visibility and increased chance of chop.
• Some operators may shorten routes or focus on more sheltered spots if wind picks up.

No guide — us included — can guarantee flat seas or a certain visibility range for your date. Good planning can choose better odds, not perfect certainty.

For a private island-hopping + snorkeling day from Tanjung Kelayang:

• Small traditional boat (2–4 people)
• Rough range: IDR 650,000–1,100,000 per boat
• Typically includes boat, captain, basic masks/snorkels, life vests.

• Fins are not always included; double-check at booking.

• Larger boat (5–10+ people)

• Rough range: IDR 900,000–1,500,000+ per boat
• Higher end boats may have more shade and slightly better ladders; still simple, local-style craft.

Not included in most base quotes:

• Park/island entrance fees (small per-person amounts)
• Lighthouse access fees at Lengkuas (when applicable)
• Lunch and drinks
• Hotel transfers (sometimes bundled, sometimes not)

• Non-swimmers can join, but should:
• Wear a life vest at all times in the water.
• Stay close to the boat and within direct line-of-sight of the crew.

• Consider using a pool noodle or additional floatation if nervous.

• Weak swimmers

• Aim for days with calmer predicted conditions.
• Tell your concierge and captain up-front so they can choose more sheltered spots and be prepared to assist.

• Kids should always wear life vests in the water; bring well-fitting vests if you’re unsure about boat stock.
• Older travellers should be comfortable with simple ladders; some boats have higher steps and no handrails. Ask for a boat with easier access if needed.

• Bring more water than you think; the combination of salt, sun and reflection can dehydrate quickly.
• Hats and sunglasses are not optional in the dry season.
• If you’re prone to seasickness, take medication 30–60 minutes before departure (confirm with your doctor) and sit mid-boat where movement is lowest.
